Why do I need a Will?
You need a will because you are an individual with possessions, and possibly heirs, that are important to you. You need a will because you want to protect them and their best interests.
According to CNN money
A will is a device that lets you tell the world whom you want to get your assets. Die without one, and the state decides who gets what, without regard to your wishes or your heirs' needs.
Some important things a Will can do when you're no longer around
- Decide who gets what- think money, heirlooms, properties, etc.
- Assign an "executor", a representative who will appear before the court, collect your assets and distribute them as you outlined in your Will
- Protect minor children by assigning a "guardian," someone who will raise and care for your children under the age of 18.
- Further protect your children and their inheritance by assigning a "custodian", someone to manage assets for your children until they can manage finances, property, etc. by themselves. You decide when they get to manage the assets on their own, at any age between 18 and 25.
